Creators of the internationally renowned ‘Luminarium’. The company has been hand-making and exhibiting these inflatable sensory installations of light and colour for over 30 years, exhibiting them in over 40 counties. For nearly 4 years, I was an integral part of the small team that would build, maintain and prepare the structures, ready for shipping to events all around the world. I would also perform the role of Luminarium Manager at some events, where I would be one of two people responsible for the structure at these events. The varied role required an efficient workrate to meet tight deadlines, accurate interpretations of complex 3D designs, and effective communication to safely handle and maneuver the substantially weighty installations, as well as great communication skills with event staff and members of the public at exhibition events. A new ‘Luminarium’ is generally built every year, taking roughly 3-5 months to complete. This requires the workshop team to work full-time, utilising various diverse skills, to complete the build in time for the new structures event debut. There would also usually be any number of other structures coming in and out of the workshops, to and from events, where we would have a variety of tasks to complete upon a structure's return or in preparation for sending it out. Tasks and responsibilities required to create a ‘Luminarium’ include: • Cutting using blades on cutting boards with large templates • 12mm seam creation using masking tape • Gluing seams together, connecting complex sections together, often over long, curving distances. Ensuring a neat outcome is essential, where glue is not visible and the material has not stretched. • Attaching additional practical components, such as zips (allowing for structure modulation), emergency exits, anchor points (for pinning the structure down at events), reinforcements (to strengthen areas of particular structural importance), etc. Tasks and responsibilities involved in managing a ‘Luminarium’ event include: • Safe unloading, positioning and erection of numerous modular pieces of the structure, in accordance with predetermined specifications. • Correct technical set up of electrical components, such as blowers and soundsystem, ensuring cabling is not impeding with the structure and any electrical equipment is protected from the elements. • Training of stewards, ensuring event specific staff understand how to safely and efficiently operate a ‘Luminarium’ event Frequent maintenance and safety checks • Engaging with the public about the Architects of Air story and how to engage with the installation safely Repairing any breached or damaged seams • Completing reports throughout event, documenting proceedings
